Learn Karma Yoga from Ahok

“If all the Upanishads and all the other scriptures
happened all of a sudden to be reduced to ashes,
and if only the first verse in the Isha Upanishad
were left in the memory of the Hindus,
Hinduism would live forever.”
~ Mahatma Gandhi

“The Lord is enshrined in the hearts of all.
The Lord is the supreme Reality.
Rejoice in him through renunciation.
Covet nothing. All belongs to the Lord.”

~first verse of Isha Upanishad

Kekuasaan itu Tuhan yang beri dan Tuhan yang ambil ~ Basuki Tjahaya Purnama

The election for Jakarta Governor has been done. 58% from total population finally bring a new Governor to lead Jakarta for the next 5 years. We all hope that this result will still continue as what had been started by current Governor, which has made almost 4000 people send  flowers to him and his vice governor, after the result of quick count shows that he  no longer will be able to lead Jakarta in the next 5 years. Basuki Tjahaya Purnama or Ahok. He has been becoming a uniq phenomenon since he won the election as vice Governor of former Governor Joko Widodo, which now leads the whole country as a President, and automatically made Ahok lead Jakarta in the last 2 years.  For me as one of Jakarta citizen for the last 11 years, Joko Widodo, and then it’s continued  by Ahok, is the only leader combination which has been successfully bringing a great change to this city.  I’ve seen so many improvements  from the simplest stuff like how they manage the citywalk and make it friendly to the disabled people, cleaning up the rivers and sterilize them, which has successfully  reduced the flood, that had been becoming the image of the city for such a long time, fix the mess in public transportation, adding more clean and good quality of busses,  up until how they secure “people money”  by implementing electronic budgeting system, which made detail control  down to the working level possible. Many more programs which are base on his purpose to make this complicated city to become a better place to live. I like his idea “only by being a government we can help many people by using none of our own money, even we will be able to help even more people by it.”

Ahok remind me with two people which both have been teaching  me about the path of action(Karma Yoga), Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. Both are people which dedicated their whole live to help others without any personal egocentric interest. They have been becoming  my spiritual teacher, which teach the world how to live for others, not because told by some king-like being up there in the sky, but by seeing  the Divine’s enshrined in each of us as a living being.

“Keep your heart pure. A pure heart is necessary to see God in each other. If you see God in each other, there is love for each other, then there is peace.” ~Mother Teresa

I’ve seen how Ahok received many complains from his people directly in “Balai Kota”, I can feel his sincerity in serving his citizen which came to him one by one. This is exactly as what  Gandhi and Mother Teresa show us years ago.  The difference is, Ahok choose to help others by becoming government, fix the bureaucracy so the social equality will be sustained even though he will no longer be elected to lead this city one more period.   He dedicated his life, (I don’t want to say to help people because not every people will benefit from they way he fix stuff in this complicated city) to greater purpose, for  the benefit of the whole society. This is the core teaching of Karma Yoga or the path of action, dedicate our life for a greater benefit, for the benefit of the society. Therefor I can say, India might be proud of their Karma Yogi like Gandhi and Mother Teresa, but here in this very religious country, I proud have ever been leaded by Ahok. For me, and may be for many people not only in Jakarta but across the country, Ahok not only has been becoming a person or a leader, which now has been taken by his rival,  but also as an inspiration and motivation for us  especially youngsters, to continue his work and make this country a better place to live, by following his integrity and spirit in helping others.

Here is only one sample how he welcomes everyone to “Balai Kota” and take 33 decisions in 17 minutes , a super efficient leader huh?

33 keputusan dalam 17 menit (30.9 detik per 1 keputusan)This is a SUPER EFFECTIVE GOVERNOR… and Jakarta will lost this extraordinary leader soon… very soon…#ahokthelegend #puaspuasinsebelumoktober #euphoriasebelumoktober

Ahok might be born in a different religious tradition  as mine, does it really matter in bringing a greater benefit ?  Just like Gandhi quote above, as people which was born in Hindu Tradition, is not about what you’re wearing , not about the place you visit every  holiday, not about the language which you use in the scriptures, not also about the holy books you read and recite every night, neither about gods or goddesses you project outside from your own mind,  not even about the label “Hindu”  itself which you use to call your tradition, or  you put in your id, which you proud of, and even many times you use to compete with other traditions selfishly. All of that stuff will not make you a real hindu practitioner.  It’s all about your capability to see Divinity which enshrined in every living being, to act completely egolessly, to bring greater benefit for whole society.  Can be trough helping people directly like Mother Teresa, or building a better sustainable system in society like what Ahok did, even just by sharing knowledge and beneficial understanding about life, as what my teacher ask me to do and put it as a daily practice in life. Helping people not always about giving money, there are even more people suffer psychologically, especially in this stressful city.

This is Yoga, this is the path of realization,  not as a limited ego behind your skin,   but as our true identity as Divine, which pervade everything, every living and non living being, including the people sitting next to you, that the religion field in his id might be completely different from yours. The Divine identity which is not separated from each others whatsoever, despite the difference in physical appearance and identity we had.  A final realization about life and about who we are,  not about how many books we memorize, that make our ego says that we know everything, let alone about the clothes we’re wearing which makes you feel superior compare to the others. Those are the biggest none-sense which created delusion and suffering to humanity over and over again throughout history, hatred, war, terrorism.. you name it!! Go beyond this very ego as a small individual, or just as a group of clown compete each others and start ruining the whole world. Go to our true  deathless  identity as a Whole. There you’ll find that our true self will never be able to hurt others, or should I say, to hurt itself. This realization should be the foundation of our society and morality, not because dictated by somebody else, or base on FEAR of something we don’t know, but through our own experience about our egoless identity.

This is the essence which I learn from the way Ahok lead Jakarta for the last 2 years.  I’m not promoting him politically, He has been lost anyway. From him I’ve learn something and  experience what my teacher said, that a lesson might be coming from any direction, even from our own enemies .

May Peace will always be with every one of us as an individual entity an also as a society, beyond this very ego.
